Renoise 2.1 final released

May 26th, 2009

Alright, Renoise v2.1 is released, as announced on this forum post!  If you’re not familiar with it, Renoise is a music production program largely based upon classic tracker-style music sequencing software.  It runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux!

While traditional trackers like FastTracker or ProTracker, for example, are limited to sample-based music production, Renoise brings some modern necessities like support for VST and Audio Unit plugins and high quality DSP effect plugins (both native Renoise plugs and VST/AU plugs).  Another key feature for me is MIDI I/O which is a must-have considering the number of hardware synths I have.

My interest in Renoise was sparked recently when I found a few videos on YouTube. I had heard about the software in relation to some demogroups whose resident musicians use(d) Renoise to produce music for their demos.

Years ago (like, 2000-2001), I produced ~100 tunes in a tracker called PlayerPRO – I actually released an album worth of songs on mp3.com (long-since defunct).  I’ve written about this on my Music page where I describe a bit of the past stuff I’ve done music-wise.  Anyway, I didn’t actually know how popular trackers were back then (nor did I know even one person who made music with a tracker), and I quickly moved onto full DAW software like Cubase and FL Studio, and more recently, Logic Audio.  Of course, now that I’ve learned of Renoise, it seems my relationship with the world of tracking may be renewed! ;)

Anyway, thus far I’ve just made a single Renoise track based on a couple tutorials I’ve read.  It’s not worth posting, but once I’ve got some new stuff produced with Renoise I’m sure I’ll post about it.

In the meantime go check out the Renoise site and see what it’s all about!  Grab the demo and try your hand at producing tracks with this totally cool program.  :)

Also feel free to check out more screenshots of the app to get an idea of its UI and workflow style.
