Fibreoptic cyberpunk “chroma” effect wallpaper

April 22nd, 2009

Check this out,  I followed a pretty cool tutorial which showed some simple tricks in Photoshop to get some very cool effects.

Basically, you create a bunch of lines, twist them all around (“warp” transform), toss on some Outer Glow, draw a bunch of crazy dots all over the place, and toss a glow on those as well.

Paintbrush "Dynamics"

Kind of surprised I never tried this particular sort of style myself.  It’s so straightforward and almost “obvious”, but I don’t usually make this kind of abstract stuff.  I also had no clue Photoshop had a “scattering” setting for the paintbrush, or other “Dynamics”, as they are called (see image on right).  One of the downsides of having used Photoshop for years and years is I sometimes don’t notice the new features, and end up working within limitations that are no longer present! :)

So, below you can see the result of my work.  Pretty cool if you ask me!  Has a very fibreoptic-like feel,  but also quite ethereal or space-like.  Kind of cyberpunk, like something you might see in the visual effects in Ghost in the Shell or the like.  Total matrix/cyberspace ambience for sure.  Wooo! :)

Check it:

If you’d like, feel free to favorite it on Flickr where I posted it for anyone to view or download.

It’s conveniently sized at 1280 x 800 pixels for anyone who would like to use it as a wallpaper.  After some popular demand, I’ve made all different sizes, even though I think the largest sizes start to show some of the pixelization of the lines around the middle of the graphic.  No big deal though.  Choose your preferred desktop size:

Also, for anyone on iPhone, here’s a special iPhone-sized version of the wallpaper:

If you’ve designed these sort of graphics before, feel free to link your own images!  I’d love to see similar works by other people around the world.
