I’ve been eagerly awaiting more news about Myst for iPhone after it was first quietly announced shortly after the launch of the 3G iPhone. Now, just today, the very first “iMyst” screenshots have been released, again rather “quietly”, in the form of a forum post by a beta tester.
For those of you who don’t know (or who have been hiding under a rock for the past 15 years), Myst was an immersive interactive point & click game, one of the most notable of its type, released in 1993. It was fairly groundbreaking as having downright stunning 3d-rendered graphics and was so popular (top selling PC adventure game ever), it actually boosted the adoption of the CD-ROM media format. I can vouch for this personally as my family bought a 4x CD-ROM drive when purchasing Myst!
Now, after countless ports and updated versions, we’re about to see what I would consider to be a historical moment in regards to Myst and Cyan, its developer.
Below are 5 screenshots posted showing how Myst is currently looking on iPhone. Keep in mind it’s being developed in-house by Cyan, so you can be sure they’re showing the closest attention to detail and quality.
Check these out!
So, Cyan employee Mark DeForest (“Chogon“) says they’re hoping to release the game in a month. So we’re looking at late April, early May, theoretically. Very cool!
Reportedly just four people have been working on the game – DeForest and Derek “Danear” Odell doing programming, with Rand Miller and Richard “RAWA” Watson handling game assets (such as graphics, sounds, movies and so on).
DeForest also hinted at the possibility of Riven being ported to the iPhone in the future: “We are not working on Riven for the iPhone/iPod… yet
”
The game will not be called iMyst, as that was a working name – the final release name will simply be “Myst”, as ought to have been expected.
As well, DeForest says the game will feature autosaving so you “don’t have to worry about saving and then restoring each time you quit (or get a phone call)”. There will also be multiple save slots available.
Well, here’s to Cyan and their upcoming iPhone release of Myst! Anyone else totally stoked? I know I am! Now, if anyone at Cyan reads this and needs another tester… I’m your guy!
