So, I haven’t really been able to post about Quake Live [wikipedia link], due to being restricted by a Non-Disclosure Agreement. However, the lid comes off the box tomorrow (February 24th) as id Software opens up Quake Live to the public for the beginning of open beta testing.
Quake Live is, mostly simply put, Quake 3 in your web browser. It doesn’t require installing hundreds of megabytes of files. In fact, it’s basically a ~4 megabyte browser plugin. Once you go to the Quake Live site (well, once it’s relaunched for open beta), it will download a variety of files needed for the gameplay session.
Unfortunately, it’s Windows-only at the moment, but id is apparently working with Apple to bring Quake Live to OS X (noted at 7:05 in the liveblog). Good thing, since a pretty substantial part of the reason to develop a browser-based version of a game would be cross-platform compatibility.
Anyway, by the time most of you are reading this blog post, the beta will probably be opened to the public, so hit up the Quake Live site and sign up! If it’s not available yet… well.. be patient!
If you want to add me up as a friend in the game, search for necro2607.
I’ve grabbed the wallpapers offered on the site, since it’s not guaranteed they will be around forever.
