Free songs weekly at Starbucks

starbucks-pick-of-the-week

I don’t think I’ve stumbled on to anything new here, but yesterday while I was at a Starbucks location in Vancouver, I spotted a box with “free song” cards.

Update: See the “Related posts” links at the bottom of this page if you’re looking for iTunes song codes!

Each week they are choosing a new song to give away as such. Each card has a unique code which you then Redeem in iTunes (whether on your home computer or iPhone). This week’s song was “I Don’t Know” by Lisa Hannigan. Unfortunately, not my style at all. Regardless, it’s a cool idea to give some free tunes as such.

When I first got my iPhone (on which I’ve written most of this post), I pretty quickly hopped on iTunes to browse around and fully expected to find some kind of periodic free song download. There was no such thing to be found. At least now they are doing this team-up with Starbucks (not the first time they’ve done that) to bring some free tunes to the table (er, to your ears ;) ).

The thing that surprises me is that I can’t find very recent articles about this. I have found a lot of posts from April 2008, so it seems that is when this promotion began.

Another problem, though, is these cards are not present at any Starbucks locations near my office at work! I will make a point of asking some of them about this. Anyone else seen these cards before at their usual Starbucks locations?

Update: turns out these cards are at the location nearest to my office. Nice! Except, they had a different song, “Chances” by Jill Barber (again, not my style :( ). Either way, cool stuff. Now I can check a new tune for free every week. :)

Update 2:  When redeeming one of the codes on my computer (as opposed to redeeming on the iPhone as I was doing before), I was redirected to an iTunes Store page featuring this Starbucks “Pick of the Week” promotion.  Feel free to check it out.

I cannot figure out how to put these directly on my iPhone. I have found instructions for downloading to computers all over the net but none on going straight to the iPhone. Can you walk me through it?

My granddaughter has a recorded song–any chances of her being Pick of the Week, and, if so, how do I go about recommending it? Thanks,
